Six New Destinations About to Become More Accessible by Private Jet
One of the advantages of private jet travel is the ability to land at thousands of smaller airports inaccessible to the airlines, worldwide. Despite this, long international trips can be daunting and many of the world’s attractive destinations require circuitous routings and even long connecting journeys by road. This is especially true for travelers trying to reach some of the world's most remote yet cherished destinations.
Fortunately, a number of strategically located airports are being developed to make these hard-to-reach regions more accessible to international tourism. These new airports will help open up more of the world to discerning travellers. Here are some of the newest airports that have either recently opened or are currently under construction, poised to simplify your travel to popular destinations around the globe.
Siem Reap, Cambodia
In November 2023, Cambodia unveiled a brand-new airport in Siem Reap, the gateway city to the iconic Angkor Wat temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located approximately 25 miles east of Angkor Wat, the new airport replaces the older facility and accommodates larger planes for nonstop international flights, significantly enhancing access to this ancient wonder. For private jet travelers, this means a seamless and luxurious journey directly to one of the world’s most revered historical sites, bypassing commercial airline congestion and ensuring a personalized travel experience.
Western Sydney, Australia
Set to open in 2026, the Western Sydney Airport, also known as Nancy-Bird Walton Airport, promises numerous advantages for travelers, especially those using private jets. Located further inland from Sydney's current airport, it offers a convenient departure point for locals and visitors heading to the nearby Blue Mountains National Park. The new airport alleviates congestion at Sydney’s existing airport, providing a more spacious and accessible travel experience, perfect for private jet charters seeking efficiency and comfort.
Dominica (Caribbean Island)
Dominica’s first international airport is under construction and expected to be completed by 2026. This transformative project will replace the island’s current regional facility and accommodate direct flights from the Caribbean, Europe, and North America. Among the many attractions here is Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site. This area, with an over 4,000 foot high Morne Trois Pitons Volcano at its heart, is supported by hot springs, a boiling lake, boiling mud pools, crater lakes, cloud and rainforest, the Titou Gorge and a chorus of 50 fumaroles (where volcanic gases and vapors are emitted). Getting to Dominica will be easier than ever. For private jet travelers, this means direct, hassle-free access to the island’s stunning natural beauty, eliminating the need for layovers and offering an exclusive gateway to this Caribbean paradise.
Amalfi Coast, Italy
The picturesque Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy is set to become more accessible with the introduction of its own commercial airport. By converting a former military and private airport, this new facility will provide convenient access to vibrant coastal towns, with initial flights commencing in July 2026. Private jet travelers will benefit from a direct and luxurious route to the Amalfi Coast, known for its stunning scenery and charming towns, avoiding the hassle of long drives from distant airports.
Peru's Sacred Valley
Chinchero Airport, scheduled to open in 2026, aims to simplify transit for the millions of visitors flocking to Machu Picchu annually. This airport will serve as a direct gateway to the iconic archaeological site, reducing the need for multiple connections and train rides. Private jet travelers will appreciate the convenience of a direct flight to the heart of Peru’s Sacred Valley, offering a seamless journey to explore one of the world’s most significant historical sites.
Nuuk, Greenland
Greenland is transforming travel to its capital city, Nuuk, with significant expansions to its airport aimed at boosting tourism. The new runway, double the size of the previous one, will support nonstop flights from North America and Europe, eliminating layovers in smaller towns. The newly extended runway is set to be operational later in 2024, and promises a streamlined travel experience for private jet passengers, offering exclusive amenities and direct access to Greenland’s breathtaking landscapes. Additionally, by 2026 the popular tourist town of Ilulissat will also have a new airport ready to welcome travelers.
And on the Horizon..
Two other notable airport projects are in the planning stages. In the Caribbean, the island of Nevis is currently planning to extend its 4,000 foot runway by at least 1,000 feet to permit private jet charters from North America and elsewhere. Meanwhile the south pacific paradise of Bora Bora, in French Polynesia, has plans to extend its runway in order to cater to intercontinental private jets within the next decade.
